8. The Coach

Dedicated to John C. Pennington, KIA June 9, 1968, Vietnam. John was my AAU swimming coach at the Roy Municipal Pool when I was 7-9 years old. I don’t remember crying at word of his death or at the services when I was 13 years old. I was simply left numb and dumb. I started crying in front of a touring mock-up of the Vietnam Memorial Wall 18 years later. I wrote the song that night. I’m still crying.

Music and the bulk of the lyrics were originally written from my front porch over-looking Fremont Island on the Great Salt Lake at sunset, in springtime, when I was 17 years old. Learning of Daniel Jones and 19 others left through the winter at Devil’s Gate near Martin’s Cove caused me to change seasons and lyrics for this letter home.
